On behalf of the Jasper City Council and more than 200 city employees, I want to welcome you to our website. Jasper is located on I-22, the Memphis to Birmingham Highway, surrounded by natural beauty, such as Smith Lake, and fabulous schools and lifestyle opportunities. Our downtown is bustling with award-winning restaurants, a local brewery, and year-round activities like the Foothills Festival, Jasper Eats, and many others. Whether you are visiting for the day or week, or if you plan to stay a while, we look forward to seeing you in Jasper soon.
Bio
Mayor Gary Cowen served as District 3 Councilmember from 2000 through October 28, 2024, at which time he was sworn in as mayor. He graduated from Auburn University and UAB Medical School. He completed a residency in OB-GYN and practiced in Jasper. Gary is married to Julie Cowen and they have four children. He is a member of the First Methodist Church and serves on the following boards: Daybreak Spouse Abuse Shelter, Jasper Family Resource Center, and the Administrative Board of First Methodist Church. He previously served on the grant review committee for the Walker Area Community Foundation.
